superfoods.

i learn best when i type/write something after reading it. 
naturally i am drawn to compose a blog post about super foods.

what is a superfood?  foods that serve as a great source of nutrients, promoting optimal health due to their high contents of phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity)


dark leafy greens: kale, spinach, romaine, mustard greens, collard greens, chicory, swiss chard
nutrient dense
source of chlorophyll
provides protein, betacarotene, vitamins (folic acid, vitamin A) & minerals (iron, calcium)
fiber
phytonutrients (lutein, zeaxanthin, flavonoids) - antioxidant properties.



berries: blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, acai, etc.
some of the highest ORAC foods
antioxidants
phytonutrients (anthocyanin, pterostilbene) - prevention of cancer cells.



cacao: the raw form of chocolate. 
scientific name "Theobroma" = "food of the gods"
high in antioxidant flavonoids
minerals (sulfer, magnesium) - heart protection



goji berries: also known as wolfberries
used in Chinese medicine 
high in ORAC 
nutrients (beta-carotene, vitamin c, amnio acids, and vitamin b)



spirulina: blue-green micro algae
high in protein
rich in b vitamins, chlorophyll, beta-carotene, vitamin e


maca: instant energy lift & mood-enhancing qualities
improve libido
important traditional and medicinal plant 
provides more then 55 phytonutrients, fiber, all the macronutrients, protein, carbs, fats, and many vitamins & minerals



Of course there are more super foods then the ones that I have listed, however I am studying these particular foods which is why I am writing about them.
